This reminds Us of a story.
Well, maybe more of a phenomenon, really. A story told in aggregate, across many near-identical episodes. A story in aggregate from the days when We were running a hardware store. And it goes like this:
Our store was a TrueValue. You may have heard of them. TrueValue is a co-operative consisting of thousands of independently owned stores. Years before there was also ServiStar, which worked the same way. Back in 1996 ServiStar merged with and was absorbed by TrueValue. People heard about this, We suppose, at the time. But as often happens with these sorts of things that people are not terribly interested in, the facts about this detail got lost, and the only perception left was that there was some kind of detail; some kind of fact that nobody could quite be bothered to remember. Not that this prevented them from calling upon this hazy recollection when it came time to be confidently incorrect. The one thing the public at large can be counted on to do reliably is to get their hooks into half of a fact to use it to come to entirely the wrong conclusion.
The upshot of all of this was that people constantly brought Us coupons for Ace Hardware. An entity that is not, it should be noted, TrueValue. And was in fact one of Our bitter competitors. Then of course they would get angry at Us when we could not honor them.
"This coupon is for Ace Hardware," we would tell them.
"Exactly! Ace TrueValue," we had more than one customer snap back, "Which is you!" Sometimes angrily, but most often with that entitled and patronizing tone of voice that indicates that the individual cannot believe that they need to explain to you how your business works and which building you stick your key in the door to unlock every morning. As if we maybe forgot.
"Sir and/or madam, TrueValue and Ace Hardware have nothing to do with each other. Your claim is like insisting that Ford and Chevy are the same company," we would reply, "Which is patently absurd."
"There was a merger," came the inevitable retort, usually with a dismissive hand-waving gesture that came a little too close to the face. "I saw it on TV or something. You must not know about it. Can you get your manager? I don't have time for this."
"Sir and/or madam, we are the manager. And the merger was with ServiStar, not Ace. Also, it happened over two decades ago."
It is certain, We have discovered from this and other interactions with the teeming masses, that the more wrong an individual is, the greater refusal there is to be corrected.
In any event, We did not accept the coupons.
So Zephyr has unwisely elected to name this hood "Verona." We would be remiss if we did not point out that Verona is also the brand name of a completely different manufacturer of hoods. We can only guess at how many calls Verona must get on their customer support line (and probably vise-versa) with irate callers complaining about a problem with their "Verona Zephyr hood," and just how hard those callers fight against being corrected.
